The Secret Anchor of the Believer

I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. Revelation 21:6

Not having much nautical exposure or expertise growing up, I was excited when I a friend took me fishing on a boat. And when we anchored, though it seemed like we were moving about by the waves, I was reminded by my friend that the anchor was solid, heavy and would ensure that we were not drifting away. One of the questions that has plagued humanity, is “what is my purpose?” Am I just drifiting along in life that has no meaning? Are we heading anywhere, or is life simply a cummulative sum of random chance events? Is there really nothing to this propensity of the heart to beleive in justice and that someday all things will be set right by the just Judge of the earth?

The very questions of purpose and meaning assume an ideal. For it to make any sense, this ideal must not only exist, it must be fixed, and it must be transcendent. The question preceding the question, “What is my purpose?” is “Why should there be any purpose in the first place?”. Our heart longs for it because eternity is inscribed in our hearts. It instinctively senses that there ought to be order not just chaos, there ought to be meaning, not just random events, and there ought to be a higher end to all the actions and the circumstances we call life. It longs for a fixedness, an anchor to life that is above this life, that does not change, that can be relied upon.

To these questrions, I have found a secret anchor – these words of our Lord, repeated four times in the last book of the Bible – “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End”. Yes, there was a Beginning, and He was there! And yes, there is an End and He will be there! He is the Beginning, and He is the End! We go to the beginning, and it is not just an abyss, a big bang, or a slow, tired evolution, but we encounter a Person, a Great Mind, a Master Designer who is good! Then we reach the end, and He has not disappeared. We find again the same Person, the same Great Mind, the same Master Designer who has been there all along, guiding the paths of the living things, of the stars and the suns and the moons, of the galaxies known and unknown, and He is good. A Chrsitian may truly rejoice for their anchor is a Person, a Living Christ infusing meaning and purpose, and proclaiming, “I am the beginning and the end, the first and the last”. When we get a glimpse of Christ, and hear His words, in all of the chaos we begin to see order, in all of the seeming randomness, we see a guiding hand. The inexplicable questions of life fade as we see this gigantic figure of Christ holding all the worlds, proclaiming “I am the alpha and the omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last”

Brother, has life dealt some serious blow? Then remember He is the Beginning and He is the End. Sister, has chaos surrounded you? Has confusion assailed you? Then remember He is the Beginning and the End? Cast your trust in this Secret Anchor, in the Person of Christ – He is the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End.
